Book Review of Digital Minimalism
Digital Minimalism: Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy World
What is meant by the term "minimalism?" It is an approach to arts, technology, or other aspects of life in which one uses "just enough and never an abundance" of any single or group of tools or methods. Minimalism applies just enough of something to accomplish a goal. In Digital Minimalism, author Cal Newport describes methods of decluttering, distancing from social media, and setting up a more focused, happier, and less stressful life.
Digital minimalists will use the most focused and uncluttered operating system on what few devices they would use, with the most direct and feature-sparse applications to meet their needs. Newport describes techniques and routines a person may use to feel less overwhelmed by the messaging and constant connectivity competing for attention in daily life. Some are as simple as taking intervals of digital time-outs, when devices are turned off.
Digital Minimalism is certainly useful for learning how to focus and disconnect in our loud, busy, digitized world.
